Stamp Duty Shake-Up: First Home Buyers to Pay Zero From 1 May, 2025
📅 Effective 1 May, 2025
Big Savings, Big Opportunity
Game changer alert for Queensland first home buyers!
From 1st May 2025, eligible first home buyers in Queensland will no longer pay any stamp duty- no matter the property price.
This historic change is part of the government’s push to make homeownership more accessible. For many, it means saving tens of thousands of dollars - and finally being able to enter the market.
What’s Changing?
Before:
First home buyers only received stamp duty concessions for homes under a certain threshold (previously capped at $550,000–$600,000).
Above that, stamp duty was calculated on a sliding scale - costing buyers thousands.
Now:
From May 1, 2025, first home buyers pay $0 in stamp duty, regardless of the purchase price.
No cap
No partial discount
Just zero duty
What You Need to Know as a First Home Buyer
You must be eligible as a first home buyer in Queensland
You must intend to live in the property as your principal place of residence
The contract date must be on or after 1 May 2025
Bonus Tip: This change only affects stamp duty - it doesn’t affect the First Home Owner Grant, which remains available for eligible new builds.
Why Timing Is Everything
If you’re buying now, it may be worth negotiating your contract date to fall on or after 1st May, so you can take advantage of this massive saving.
