Alongside his expertise, his non-stuffy approach means clients feel comfortable and clear.

We sat down with Lucas (affectionately known as “Hewy”) to discuss his passion for leadership, helping people to be their best and how he keeps his work-life balanced.

Lucas Hewlett - Director Hewlett Legal

What do you enjoy most about running Hewlett Legal?

“Helping people solve problems, achieve success and grow their business. In turn, I learn from my clients and peers about how to do better in my business. I have a smart, independent and fun team, all of which I value. We have a lot of laughs and enjoy collaborating and learning from each other.”

What’s your leadership philosophy?

“I am a big believer in leading by example. I believe no job is too big or small for anyone. As a leader, you need to take responsibility, do the hard stuff, make the hard decisions and have the hard conversations. Also, never be afraid to admit your own mistakes so you continue to learn.”

What is the most common business question clients ask?

“What could go wrong if I do this?  Lawyers deal with risk every day, and clients need us to help them assess risk to get the best possible outcome for their business.”

What does ‘making it’ look like for you?

“Having a business that grows, staff that stay and genuinely work together as a team.  When I look to the future, I’d be happy to have a team who have been with us for a long time, who all get along well, and feel like family.”

What do you think is the biggest issue currently facing Australian small business?

“We are currently living in an employees’ market. Small business needs to understand the younger generation and adapt quickly to accommodate them. If you can’t support their needs, they will go next door. Remote working and the hybrid models must be the way of the future, particularly in the legal industry. The role of a lawyer is very transparent, both at client level and between employer and employee. Each matter you handle, all parties involved need to know where the matters is at, where fees are at, what the plan is.  You can do that working remotely as well as in the office.  That said, the office creates a collaborative environment which humans generally need. I think hybrid is the go”.

What’s something new you learned about yourself this year?

“I’m certainly getting older!! Don’t dwell on the past, focus on the future. If you make a mistake, the best thing you can do is work out how to fix it.”

How do you relax?

“Easy! Head to the beach, a bush trail or golf course. With two young sons, Anna and I tend to live a very energetic lifestyle. I also love spending time with people that make me laugh. If you are funny, you are in!”

Favourite podcast

“The Howie Games podcast is great. Mark Howard, aka Howie, sits down with the biggest names in sport and entertainment to find out how they started out, what makes them tick and how they deal with the big wins and losses.”

Book recommendations

“I enjoy reading biographies of sporting, music or business legends. I also enjoy a crime/thriller. The two current books by my bedside are: The Power of the Dog by Thomas Savage: a page-turning thriller about power and revenge; and Jonathan Thurston: The Autobiography by Jonathan Thurston.”

Secret talent

“I can play several musical instruments including the guitar, drums and I recently taught myself how to play bass guitar (poorly). Vocals are a definite no…!”
